No Electricity? No Problem, Thanks to Bright Propane Lamps
A longtime user of propane lighting, Samuel Schrock was often frustrated by the lack of quality gas lamps on the market. " I couldn’t find a lamp that was bright but still operated on the same low-pressure gas lines as household appliances" Schrock says. "Lamps that use high-pressure gas were noisy and dangerous, while low-pressure lamps were too weak.Nothing was just right"
So Schrock set out to invent a new gas lamp and a new business, Midstate Lamp LLC. Eight years and three models later, Midstate Lamp has produced Model 450, a lamp that rivals a 100-watt bulb in brightness but runs on the same low-pressure gas lines as household appliances. It is currently the brightest, most energy-efficient low-pressure lamp on the market. The secret to Model 450’s power and efficiency is in its design. The lamp's innovative burner tube and nozzle provide optimum flow, helping particulate the gas without losing the power of projection. "Its burner tube is modeled after the Venturi effect, which is designed with a constriction that speeds up the flow of gas as the propane moves through it" Schrock says. “As the gas increases in speed, it creates the perfect mix of air, gas and pressure needed to produce a bright, energy-efficient light." Midstat's quality control techniques ensure a high-quality and trouble-free lamp. Each lamp is tested before it is shipped to consumers. To make the lamp durable, Midstate used rust-resistant stainless steel, aluminum and brass in its construction. Model 450 also features a polished aluminum dish that protects the ceiling from heat and reflects the light down and outward. The lamp is low-maintenance - only its mantle needs to be replaced on a regular basis. It also operates quietly – a quality that is winning over many propane lamp users It's much quieter than portable gas lanterns with comparable brightness," said Lynn Marcus Miller, who uses Model 450 to light his central Illinois cabin. "And it's also much more convenient. It runs on the same gas line as appliances, plus there is almost no maintenance. I will never go back to a lower quality lighting system." While Midstate's two earlier models were mostly marketed to the Amish, Schrock says the Model 450 is perfect for anyone who wants to light up a remote cabin or cottage or have a backup light source in places where electricity is unreliable. Dennis Shoemaker, an avid hunter, is one such customer. Shoemaker had tried other propane lamps in his Pennsylvania hunting cabins before installing four Midstate lamps. The difference, he said, was instantly clear."Most of the standard lamps used in our area don’t put out the quality of light that this lamp does," Shoemaker said. “One of these Midstate lamps can light an entire room.” Shoemaker said he has been pleased with Midstate’s craftsmanship and service – so much so that he plans to install the company’s lamps in other hunting camps that he frequents. “The workmanship of these lamps is extremely good,” he said. “These lamps are everything their literature says they are.” Model 450, which has a patent pending, has been tested and certified to meet criteria established by the American National Standards Institute. The lamp retails for $89.95 and runs on standard propane or natural gas. It is easy to install and can be permanently mounted on the wall or the ceiling. Each lamp includes a frosted globe, aluminum reflector, mantles and mounting flange kit. In addition, Midstate Lamp carries a number of accessories specifically designed for Model 450, including a ceiling mounting kit, replacement globes, mantles and more.
