Smith & Wesson Professional Shooters Score Big at 2007 Bianchi Cup
Doug Koenig and Julie Goloski Named NRA National Action Pistol Champions
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 29, 2007) – Smith & Wesson Corp., announced today that Professional Shooters Doug Koenig and Julie Goloski have won championship titles at the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Action Pistol Championship held May 23-26 at the Green Valley Rifle and Pistol Club in Columbia, Missouri. Koenig returns to the winner’s circle for the tenth time as the overall winner of the NRA’s 29th Bianchi Cup while Goloski earned her first championship title in the women’s competition. In a shooting competition that brought in contestants from around the globe, the 2007 Bianchi Cup featured four separate matches designed to test the speed and accuracy of each participant. During the event, competitors were required to shoot from both standing and prone positions while drawing their firearms from hands above shoulder level. Shooting at stationary and moving targets, competitors fired at distances ranging from 10 to 50 yards under varying time limits. Koenig’s four match aggregate score of 1920-185X was enough to advance him past defending champion Bruce Piatt, marking the 17th year in row that a perfect score was required for the overall championship title. In the women’s competition, Goloski’s score of 1903-139X earned her the High Woman award placing her ahead of second place finisher and last year’s champion Vera Koo. “Winning the Bianchi Cup ten times throughout my career is a humbling feat and one that I take great pride in accomplishing,” said Smith & Wesson Professional Shooter Doug Koenig. “Every year the competition gets a little tougher and each year I work harder to prepare for the match. The format and courses of fire at the Bianchi Cup are very conducive to my style of shooting. I attribute my success to proper training, staying mentally prepared and utilizing the best equipment available.” While competing in the Bianchi Cup, Koenig used a Smith & Wesson Model SW1911 DK, a pistol that he helped design in collaboration with the Smith & Wesson Performance Center. The stainless steel handgun, chambered for .38 Super, is manufactured with a 5-inch barrel along with a variety of special features that help enhance accuracy. Among the features included on the single action pistol are a hand lapped and fitted barrel, frame and slide along with a Doug Koenig Speed Hammer and competition match trigger. In the women’s competition, Goloski was able to capture her first Bianchi Cup win. A former member of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit, Goloski was able to surpass 14 female challengers while also finishing an impressive 20th place in the overall standings for all competitors at the match. “I am very pleased with my performance at the Bianchi Cup,” said Goloski. “With so many talented shooters competing at such a high level, I knew that I would have to execute at my very best in order to earn the division title. The NRA does an outstanding job of designing courses of fire that are both challenging and fun. I look forward to building on my recent championship wins throughout the remainder of the competitive season.” Also competing in this year’s Bianchi Cup was Smith & Wesson Revolver Champion Jerry Miculek. Miculek, competing in the Metallic Sight Championship, placed 5th in the revolver division and 52nd in the overall standings. The NRA National Action Pistol Championship consists of four separate matches: Practical Event (timed shooting from 10 yards to 50 yards); Barricade Event (timed shooting from “cover”); Falling Plate Event (timed fire at banks of six, 8″ plates); and the Moving Target Event (target moves and is exposed for just 6 seconds). Class awards are presented to various divisions which include high law enforcement, high woman, high junior, high international, high newcomer, high senior, high service, high semi-auto, high revolver, high production firearm, Open Modified firearm and Open / Metallic Aggregate.
