no beeps, no batts, no junk

--by Oliver Shapiro
What happens in Vegas, they say, stays in Vegas.  I sure hope not.  There was way too much cool stuff at the SHOT Show in February for it to stay confined to that unique city.

My first clue was a
New Product Center that had to be at least three times as big as it’s ever been before, and the drool kicked into overdrive almost right away. After taking note of the many items crying for more attention, I committed myself to the Convention Center’s North Hall.
On the way to my first target, my bird-hunting instincts got the best of me; there on the ground was a small group of feeding doves.  Fooled again I was; this convincing item from Edge by Expedite www.edgebyexpedite.com brought me in like a rookie predator.  Designed for the dove hunter, although I can envision a coyote or fox hunter considering one as well, the Triple Play Motion Doves provide a new way to bring in those fleet little birds.  The small central motor holds three rods, each of which is attached to a dove replica in a perched/feeding position. The unit starts and stops, and at each change in motion the doves appear to be twisting and turning like a real group of happily feeding pigeons. Cool!

We live in a world that’s increasingly hi-tech, and although these whiz-bang doodads have their place, I always appreciate something that doesn’t need any electronics, beepers, batteries, or any of that junk… in fact, I like items that simply aren’t prone to mechanical or electronic failure, and I loved the new Sportsman’s Spike that the Versatile Rack Company www.versatilegunrack.com was displaying.  I’m never enthusiastic about placing my rifle or shotgun on the ground or leaning against a tree, and the simplicity and elegance of the Spike seems perfect.  A steel pole, with two loops at the top and finished in a friendly-to-metal coating, is the essence of simple functionality. Neat!
