from the pepper pots.

--By Rochelle Kaplan
Super Bowl Sunday Weekend; What Were They Thinking???   “You’re going to Las Vegas on the Super Bowl weekend?” my husband asked rhetorically when I told him I’d be attending the SHOT Show this year.  “Are you out of your mind? Do you know how many people will be in Vegas that weekend?”  “Not any more than usual,” I said assuredly. “Vegas is always crowded, so that weekend won’t be any different than any other weekend.”  I hadn’t been to a SHOT Show in Las Vegas in three long years and was surprised to see large tents erected in the parking lot across the street from the convention center. I didn’t think there was a revival meeting in town, so I assumed (correctly) that they were there to accommodate more exhibitors.  Fine and dandy, but they took away much-needed parking space.  Oh, the joys of Las Vegas.  Good thing my husband dropped me off.

As I perused my handy “Floorplan Navigator,” which required 18-year-old eyes to read, by the way, my first thoughts were in finding manufacturers of pepper spray.  Assigned to write about guns for self-protection as well as accessories for concealed carry, I also wanted to include other means of self protection for folks not comfortable carrying or even using firearms.
Security Equipment Corp. www.sabrered.com out of Fenton, MO, has the most comprehensive line of pepper spray products available.  Not knowing anything about pepper spray because I’m more of an Annie Oakley type girl, I was lucky to get the attention of the company’s VP of Operations, Robert Nance.  Nance explained to me the difference in strengths—law enforcement uses a weaker solution because they employ it only to subdue offenders before hand cuffing them—as well as how the solutions are made (tight quality control with the main ingredient being capsaicin oil imported from India).  He suggested Sabre Red as the best product for the average citizen.  “You want the strongest spray because as a civilian, you don’t have an escalation of force,” Nance said. “Sabre Red has the highest heat and the higher the better and more stopping power when it counts.”  Sabre and Sabre Red come in a variety of canister sizes (on key chains, with Velcro straps for runners, and larger canisters for home defense) and spray patterns (stream and cone).  I especially thought the 2-pack with a practice canister containing water was a really cool idea!

While Defense Technology www.defense-technology.com in Casper, WY, mainly focuses on law enforcement pepper spray (including tank-sized containers used for riots), they do offer self and home defense products.  First Defense-Stream X2 and First Defense-Stream 360, according to rep Dennis Palmer, are the most popular civilian sprays.
