More of that tactical vectoring
--by Shelby Murdoc
Fresh off a great day at some local shooting ranges taking some cracks with the latest guns, I step into the convention center and am once again blown away by the scale of the SHOT Show in general and the tactical/law enforcement sections in particular. This sector is growing at light speed. Manufacturers are scrambling to take advantage of this emerging market, and the past few years of hard work are starting to show some major results.
My first stop is at Arsenal, Inc. www.arsenalinc.com, makers of high quality AK-based firearms. Yes, there is such a thing as a high quality AK-based firearm. Their crown jewels are the SA M-7 series of rifles with US-made milled receivers. Cheap AK clones are fun plinkers and utility rifles, but they are not in the same class as these Arsenal guns. These are precision weapons made from new parts and built to exacting specifications. It might look like an AK and it might sound like an AK, but it sure doesn’t shoot like an AK. Thanks, Arsenal. Now I’ll never look at my cheap Romanian clone the same way again.
Tapco www.tapco.com has a number of new tactical aftermarket accessories including the AK FUSION Handguards and the FUSION Vertical Grip. The Handguards incorporate a concealed Picatinny rail for mounting lights, lasers, grips, or bipods and it counts as 1 US Sec 922R compliant part. The Vertical Grip mounts onto standard rails and has flat sides for the solid attachment of light tape switches, which is cool. Another new and cool item from Tapco is their AK Side Mount, a polymer platform which mounts to the side scope bracket present on most AKs and sports a topside Picatinny rail. The Side Mount allows the removal of the receiver cover without removing the scope or losing zero.
The highlight of Day 1 in the tactical zone has to be the KRISS Super V system by Transformational Defense Industries www.kriss-tdi.com. The Super V Vector SMG is a revolutionary .45 caliber submachine gun with a unique action that virtually eliminates muzzle climb and greatly reduces felt recoil. On Friday I fired one on semiautomatic and two-round burst and was amazed at the ease of picking off clays scattered on the berm with double tap. Around lunch time I headed upstairs and caught the TDI press conference announcing the semi-auto-only CRB/SO Civilian Carbine and the exclusive distributorship in the US with AcuSport Corporation www.acusport.com.
