ARs have certainly taken the shooting community by storm, so it’s fitting that I spent most of the second day of the show checking out offerings and cool accessories in the black rifle market. First up was the Piston CQB by Lewis Machine & Toolwww.lewismachine.net, a piston-driven AR that’s available now (well, with a 16 week lead time due to super high demand) and features the durability and quality you’ve come to expect from LMT. It uses the standard LMT barrel, which is rated for machine gun use. “I wish I would have brought 10 of these to the show instead of 2,” the rep told me. Then, as if on cue, another rep came and snatched it away to show a prospective customer. So hot, it’s cool. Next stop is Stag Armswww.stagarms.com and their new Model 6L Super Varminter. The 6L features a 24” stainless steel match-grade bull barrel and a 2-stage match trigger and is available, of course, in a true left-handed model. In fact, roughly 40 percent of Stag Arms’ sales are of their left-handed models. Thanks to Stag, southpaw shooters can be cool, too. DPMS Panther Armswww.dpmsinc.com featured a number of new rifles, including the LR-6.5, designed specifically for the new 6.5 Creedmoor round from Hornadywww.hornady.com. The Creedmoor was designed to provide factory-loaded ammunition that could compete at high levels of competitive shooting, and should be popular with tactical shooters, too. A large part of what makes the black rifles so popular is their modular nature. Accessories and customizations abound, and one that caught my eye was the AR-restor by Enidinewww.enidine.com. Though not brand-new, this drop-in replacement for AR buffers reduces felt recoil and improves control. It also reduces the rate of fully auto rifles to about 720 rounds/minute, and it uses the original buffer spring and tube. Feedback from those shooting for score, particularly when qualifying on a weapon, has been great. Suppliers of AR parts kits for eight years, Del-Tonwww.del-ton.com made the jump to complete rifles two weeks before the show opened. A favorite with do-it-yourself types for years, Del-Ton is hoping that their popularity will carry over. With prices for complete rifles starting at just $699, it’s likely it will. A run-down of new black rifles at the SHOT Show would not be complete without mentioning Rock River Arms’www.rockriverarms.com new Elite Comp. This rifle features the new RRA Half Quad Free Float handguard, a combination of faceted aluminum for sure handling and a quad rail for all the clamp-on that make ARs so functional and fun. With match trigger, winter trigger guard, tactical muzzle break, and flip-up sights, this rifle is ready for some serious shooting, whether it’s at the range or on duty.
