Hail to the Icons

--By Bob Hausman
Remington Arms Co. www.remington.com has developed recoil reduction technology, as well.  Called SuperCell, this new recoil pad is said to be so effective that it allows a Model 870 shotgun to produce 54 percent less recoil than competing autoloaders with their factory pads. Over ten years in development, the polymer SuperCell pad is offered as standard on select Remington models for 2008 and is also sold as a stand-alone accessory.

Remington also showed a special edition of its Model 870 commemorating the gunmaker’s 100 years of pump shotgun manufacturing.  Featuring gold inlays, upgraded wood and fine checkering, this is one of the nicest looking editions of Remington’s 870 around.

New Remington models for varmint hunters include the Model 700 VTR (Varmint Target Rifle) with an innovative 22-inch triangular design barrel that reduces weight and increases rigidity.  An integral upward venting muzzle brake helps reduce muzzle flip and the blue steel action is mated with an OD Green synthetic stock with black overmolded grip panels. Chambered for .204 Ruger, .223 Rem., .22/250 Rem. and .308 Win. SRP: $805.

The .17 Rem. Fireball chambering is now available in the Remington Model 700 VSSF II (Varmint Synthetic Stainless Fluted).  It features a 26-inch, .820-diameter fluted stainless-steel barrel/action with synthetic HS Precision stock with aluminum block bedding, beavertail forend, dual front sling swivel studs, pistol grip palm swell and X-Mark Pro trigger. SRP: $1,248.

One of the most active firms undertaking new product introductions was Smith & Wesson www.smith-wesson.com, which unveiled a total of some 71 new products and/or line extensions.  While much of the new items shown were for the self-defense market, there were new innovations made for the hunting segment.  The S&W i-Bolt bolt-action rifle is now available in a stainless steel configuration, including the new chamberings of .300 Win. Magnum and 7mm Rem. Magnum. S&W’s Thompson/Center Arms subsidiary launched ten new variations of the ICON bolt-action rifle in long action calibers featuring .270, .30-06, 7mm Rem. Magnum, and 300 Win. Magnum.
