What’s your life worth? Given how much many people pay for life insurance over decades, the price is pretty high. But a couple of hundred dollars? Sounds like a no-brainer to us. Enter SPOT www.findmespot.com, a satellite messenger service that will bring you back from the brink of perish with the touch of a button. This may be the coolest device we found at SHOT.  SPOT is a combination of two things, a small handheld unit, and a subscription service. You need both to accomplish rescue or recovery. We can’t help but think about aviator daredevil Steve Fossett who was recently declared legally dead after he disappeared six months ago while flying over a remote section of northern Nevada. Neither his body nor his aircraft were ever found. If he had SPOT, his flying route would have been tracked by family, friends and emergency rescue teams.  SPOT works simply. The push of a single button transmits your location—while on a wilderness hunt or other activity—to a satellite which re-transmits your signal (as does a GPS) back to earth. It lets family and friends track your progress and save your location using Google Maps; it lets contacts check in via their computers to where you are and that you’re okay; it lets you request help from your exact location; and it lets you dispatch emergency responders to your situation.  The handheld SPOT, which operates on two AA Lithium batteries and works anywhere in the world, retails for about $170. Subscription to the SPOT satellite messenger service (you need both) is $99 a year or $9.99 a month. Upgrades include a GEOS Search and Rescue benefit for $7.95 at time of activation and $150 annually afterwards.

There were lots of great tactical rifles at SHOT, but one that especially caught our eye was from SigSauer www.sigsauer.com, the SIG556.  Just one look at the gun reveals that it was made for further customization.  Thirty-eight states allow tactical rifles with folding stocks, so the SIG556 has a folding stock, making the gun very portable. The collapsible buttstock features a rubber butt pad, multiple sling attachment points, and a waterproof battery compartment. The ergonomically designed pistol grip features an integrated storage compartment.
The 556’s three integrated Picatinny rail system above and below the forearm handguard accommodates a vertical front grip, the grip accommodates a tactical flashlight, and probably a tire iron, cup holder, a couple of screwdrivers, pliers, two-blade knife package and your wife’s spare quick change C-cup.  The optional flip up front combat sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. Even if the wind isn’t blowing and you’re not in a treestand, the stuff’s there, just in case. The Picatinny rail-equipped receiver is made of high strength carbon steel. The rail features an optional flip up rear sight that works in concert with the optional front combat sight, providing iron sight performance and a back up sight option for optics. Select versions feature a Red Dot style holographic sight. This sighting system provides quick target acquisition and features four different illuminated reticle patterns with adjustable intensity. The rifle comes equipped with a smooth two-stage trigger, ambidextrous safety and is designed to accept standard AR magazines. A 30-round magazine is supplied with each rifle.
