I’m dragging badly by now, but with so much to see I limp on over to the Ruger Law Enforcement booth www.ruger.com. New for this year are three tactical rifles based upon the tried and true Mini-14. The one that catches my eye is the GBCC model, sporting the synthetic collapsible stock by Tapco that I pointed out in last year’s show coverage.
The M1 Carbine hasn’t been a front-line tactical weapon for decades, but a new M1 model of the venerable gun by Auto-Ordnance www.tommygun.com with a folding polymer stock should help this plinker nudge its way into the black rifle market. It’s fun to shoot, and fun is cool.
As noted earlier, tactical lights are a vital part of the mix these days. eGear’s www.essentialgear.com XT line of tactical lights, powered by K2 Luxeon LEDs, deliver 100 and 130 stunning lumens at great prices. These lights are bright, tough and long-lasting.
Last year I noted the Hydra Modular Weapons System, a black rifle platform that features interchangeable components for easy caliber changes. Built by MGI www.mgimilitary.com, this multi-headed beast is expanding quickly, adding capability for .45 ACP, 5.45mm AK-74, 7.62 PPSH and more, all by swapping out a few parts. They’ve also managed to fit .308, using a fixed magazine, into their standard-sized AR. Amazing. Also of great interest from MGI is their series of modular Law Enforcement rifles. These ARs are standard in most ways except that they use Glock pistol magazines, making them excellent patrol rifles for police already armed with Glock sidearms. They are available in .45, .40, and 9mm.
Once again, the Special Combat Automatic Rifle (SCAR) by FNH USA www.fnhusa.com was a hit at the show. I had a chance to fire both the light (5.56mm) and heavy (7.62mm) models before the show opened, and they are simply awesome. Entering service with the US Special Forces as you read this, they will be mainstays in the War on Terror for years to come. A semiautomatic version of the SCAR, still in prototype form, made its debut this year. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more about it soon.
Also from FNH is the new FNAR, a .308 rifle with multiple customizations to give you the best shot possible. The January issue of SSR included an article by contributing writer Jeff Fletcher which referred to this rifle as a “tactical crossover,” an apt description for guns that serve both the military/LE and commercial markets. This new rifle is available with standard or heavy fluted barrels and will be out within a month or two. Quote this article on your site | Views: 218
