ON THE RHODE IN TENT CITY PDF Print E-mail
By Oliver Shapiro
Man, there’s a lot more in those across-the-street big tents than I’d originally thought!  After some more leaden oatmeal I trekked over again to what else might be there, and there was plenty.

How about a wildlife feeder that doesn’t need batteries? Faultline Outdoors (512-653-0675) was displaying one that is powered by solar energy.  No batteries to replace, little if any chance of failure due to power runout, less stressful to the environment…and features like a windproof “long range” metal slinger, and four programmable feed times daily. Way cool!

Knives and blades are big for a great many retailers, and let’s face it: guys just like to collect these things. Heck, I have about nine just sitting on my desktop and I don’t even collect them. WKC Solingen Germany www.wkc-usa.com supplies ceremonial swords to various branches of the US Armed Forces, but what caught my eye were their small, miniature models, described as letter openers, that come with their own little display stands.  A number of replicas are available, including a U.S. Army Saber, U.S. Air Force Sword, U.S. Marine Corps NCO Saber, and more. Your customers’ reactions when they see these? Cool!

“Smell this.”
Hm?  Okay; I’ll bite, er, smell.  Rock Gibboney at the Moxy www.moxyproducts.com booth was holding his hand in front of me; he’d just smeared some onion on it. Yep, sure stinks.  He then treated his hand with his system, and held his hand back for another smell—there was none.  Carbon suits, so long.  Hunters have been reading about scent elimination for years now, but here’s a new system that could really revolutionize the process.  Their Scent Elimination System uses a patented molecule that eliminates odors and oxidizes (read: obliterates) odor-causing microbes.  It’s delivered to a chamber, in which the materials and garments to be de-scented are placed and resembling a garment bag, via a DC-powered unit. Cool? For sure!

Meh; another electronic doodad on the display counter there; just keep moving along… but hold on a sec.  Are those weather readouts?  Any outdoorsman is in near-constant touch with weather conditions and forecasts, as they have an obvious impact on the next day’s planned excursion, and as long as there’s a nearby internet connection, La Crosse Technology’s Weather Direct www.lacrossetechnology.com enables one to do just that.  It’s a Net-powered weather system delivering customized current weather info and forecasts, all available at a mere glance?  Let’s proceed with that deer hunt on Thursday if the weather is sufficiently Cool!

Okay; back to the main building; there’s plenty there we haven’t seen yet.  And, yeah, nice talking with Richard Rhode (father of Olympic superstar shooter Kim Rhode); a heckuva nice fellow, and just one of the many great people one encounters at SHOT each year…
Don’t you dare think that these are the only cool items seen at the show, but our publisher is undoubtedly unwilling to spring for a 800-page version of this issue. If you want to see more cool stuff at a SHOT Show, you know what you have to do!
