Auto Ordnance Donates Gun to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Popular Tommy Gun Auctioned Off at Speak Easy Gala
PEARL RIVER, NY & MEMPHIS, TN– The Auto-Ordnance Corporation recently donated one of its popular Tommy Guns with a 50-round drum magazine to the Memphis Division of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The gun, donated along with a nostalgic violin shaped carrying case, was a perfect fit for the Roaring 20’s themed Gala held Saturday night, September 6 at the Hilton Memphis.
Jon Anderson had the winning bid during the live auction, where the Tommy Gun was the first item of the night up for bid. The gun auctioned off for a cool $1600, with all proceeds going towards the fight for cystic fibrosis.
 The Speak Easy Gala required all guests to wear a fedora to the event and featured bouncers guarding the doors and flapper girls greeting guests upon arrival. Big Band sounds of the 20’s entertained guests while hors d’vours and cocktails were enjoyed during the silent auction.
The Auto-Ordnance Company was founded in 1916, as a result of John Thompson’s strong interest in the development of an automatic rifle. He believed an "intermediate" automatic weapon in the ballistic class between the pistol and the rifle would be a requirement in the future. In 1919, Thompson's dream became a reality, and the new gun was a delayed blowback type feeding from a characteristic drum magazine with an outline that became well known, a finned barrel, two pistol grips and a short butt. Thompson coined the term "submachine gun" but the press needed a term to catch the public fancy, and thus, the term "Tommy Gun" came into being. Auto-Ordnance actually registered "Tommy Gun" with the Trade Mark division of the Patent Office and this was even stamped on some guns.
